Seychelles

The Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, off East Africa. It’s home to numerous beaches, coral reefs and nature reserves, as well as rare animals such as giant Aldabra tortoises. Mahé, a hub for visiting the other islands, is home to capital Victoria. Nearby island countries and territories include the Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, and the French overseas regions of Mayotte and Réunion to the south; and Maldives and the Chagos Archipelago to the east.

The original French colonists on the previously uninhabited islands, along with their black slaves, were joined in the 19th century by deportees from France. Seychelles has a mixed developing economy that is heavily dependent upon the service sector in general and the tourism industry in particular. Seychellois enjoy participating in and watching several team sports. The national stadium, located in Victoria, offers a year-round program of events. Men’s and women’s volleyball are popular, and several Seychellois players and referees participate at the international level.
