Valletta, the capital of Malta, is mainly a web of narrow streets. Here Khadija is on one in front of San Paola Church. Notice the box windows, a common feature in the city. It has the dual functions of extending floor space and allowing more wind in. The local term is gallarija (gallery in Italian) and is closely related to the mashrabiya which is typical in Arabic architecture.
