Machu Picchu is a bucket-list destinations for many travelers. Those fortunate to make it there are awarded with spectacular Inca ruins from before the European discovery of the New World. I also hiked the Inca Trail, stayed in Cuzco and travelled to the Sacred Valley. As magnificent as everything I saw was, there are plenty more sites in the region which author Mark Adams explores, sometimes with great exertion and difficulty. Reading about his experiences and findings helps the reader understand that Machu Picchu was just part of a vast, well-run and sophisticated empire. I read this book before I went to Machu Picchu and it greatly helped in understanding Inca culture and architecture.
