Maldives – Indian Ocean Paradise

Introduction We finally made it to the Maldives from Sri Lanka. From the Velana International Airport, we flew over many of the country’s islands. We landed on one island and switched to a boat. Once we were docked on our island, we took a golf cart through town, passing children playing soccer. We checked into.....

Introduction We were impressed by several interesting memorials and temples we saw in Colombo, including this lion statue in front of a stupa… …the Red Mosque… …the Hindu temples in Captain’s Garden… …and the statue of the first prime minister next to Independence Memorial Hall. The biggest surprise was learning about the work of Geoffrey.....

Sri Lanka – Part 3 – Jaffna Peninsula

Introduction We entered Jaffna not knowing what to expect. We found the central food market was lively despite decades of civil war… …the people on the streets were back to living normal lives… …and families were making pilgrimages to Hindu temples. However, what never ceases to amaze me is the psychedelic decorations at Hindu temples,.....

But it was not just cultural immersion. In between, we.....

Sri Lanka – Part 1 – Tea Country & Gal Oya National Park

Introduction I knew a little about different ethnic groups living in Sri Lanka, including the Sinhalese, who are mostly Buddhist… …and the Tamils who are mostly Hindu… …and Muslims, many of whom are descendants from Arab traders. However, I did not know about the original inhabitants, the Veddas, until visiting the country and meeting them......

Kumbh Mela – The World’s Largest Religious Event

Introduction I finally made it to the Kumbh Mela where I… …observed thousands of Hindu pilgrims bathing in the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati Rivers… …and talked with Sadhus, the Hindu ascetics who have has renounced the worldly life. Mumbai – City of Dreams

Introduction Even though I have visited India several times, this was my first trip to Mumbai. I knew it was the target of a deadly terrorist attack on the Taj Hotel. I knew it was the financial and business capital of India with a sprawling skyline. While Mumbai was modern in many ways, I was aware.....

  • Elephant Seals lounge and interact on the beaches near San Simeon year round, as they go through different phases in their life cycle. In peak times, there are up to 17,000 animals here. Humans are not allowed on the beaches, but can observe from an elevated board walk. Elephant seals are true seals (unlike sea lions) with no external ears and reduced limbs which help them move easily in the water but harder on land. Elephant seals spend 90% of their life underwater and can cover 60 miles / day. When born, they weigh up to 80 pounds and up to 4 feet. Males weigh up to 10 times more than females, reaching up to 5,000 pounds in the northern hemisphere and more in the south. #elephantseals #sansimeon #californiacoast

  • The room I remember most in #hearstcastle from visiting here a long time ago is the #romanpool. The bluish and grey mosaic tiles with real gold highlights were made in Italy on an island by Venice. The pool design is based on a grand #romanbath, such as #Caracalla in Rome. The mosaic patterns are similar to those found in #Byzantine churches in #ravenna Italy. The statues are copies of Roman and Greek ones. #indoorpool #californiacoast #classicalarchitecture

  • Hearst Castle - I was here a couple decades ago and only remember the pools. Now with more years of travel and study, I better appreciate the components of the building. Much of the medieval facades, furniture and art pieces are from Spain and Italy. There are many statues, some original and even dating from Pharaonic Egypt. I realized many are copies when I saw Donatello’s David which the original is in the Uffizi in Florence. There are many similarities with the Cloisters in NYC, now part of the Metropolitan Museum. Probably Hearst and Rockefeller were bidding against each other to furnish these modern day Xanadus. #hearstcastle #cloistersmuseum #williamrandolphhearst #citizenkane #uffizi #statueofdavid #donatello #xanadu #pharaonicegypt #californiacoast

  • The very bright Harvest Moon. While it may look small in the picture, it was very bright and looming as it emerged over the mountains of Big Sur. It was a omen of good fortune for the wedding we attended that night. #harvestmoon #harvestmoonneilyoung #bigsur #californiatravels #californiarepublic
